Are you obligated?
You are likely to be obligated as a Producer under the UK Batteries and Accumulators Legislation.
You need to check whether your obligation is as a producer of automotive, industrial and or portable batteries. Find out your obligation here.
If you are obligated as a portable batteries producer and you place more than 1 tonnes of batteries on the UK market each year then you need to join a Batteries Compliance Scheme such as Comply Direct. Become a member of the Comply Direct batteries compliance scheme.
If you are obligated as a portable batteries producer and you place less than 1 tonnes of batteries on the UK market each year then you need to register direct with the Environment Agency (EA). Ask Comply Direct to check your producer obligation and for more details regarding the registration process with the EA.
If you are obligated as an automotive or industrial batteries producer then you need to register directing with the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Ask Comply Direct for more details on the registration process and to check your Producer obligation.
Remember, if you have bought batteries from a UK supplier then you will not be considered to be a producer.
In addition you may also be obligated as distributor under the batteries legislation. A distributor is defined as a company that supplies batteries from the UK, or products containing batteries, on a professional basis to an end user. It is possible to be both a producer and distributor if you buy and sell batteries and in this case you will need to comply with the obligations for both categories. Find out more.
