Recycling and recovery targets
On 2 May 2006, the EU agreed that the WEEE Directive set very challenging targets for each EU member state relating to the collection and recycling of batteries and accumulators. At present the UK has a very poorly developed collection infrastructure for portable batteries and it is estimated that the UK will have to collect approximately 7,500 tonnes of portable batteries for recycling by 2012 to meet its European targets (last year the amount collected was just 600 tonnes).
