What products do batteries cover?
The new Battery Directive 2006/66/EC applies to all batteries and accumulators placed on the Community market - “regardless of their shape, volume, weight, composition or use”
The only batteries/accumulators which are not covered by the new Battery Directive 2006/66/EC are batteries and accumulators used in equipment connected with a Member State’s security (batteries for specifically military purposes) and batteries and accumulators designed to be sent into space.
The Directive applies different obligations upon producers of portable, industrial and automotive batteries. Our intention is to interpret the definition of batteries and accumulators in the following way:
An automotive battery is one which is used for the starting or ignition of the engine of a vehicle, or for providing power for any lighting used by the vehicle.
A portable battery or battery pack is one which is sealed, can be hand-carried, and is neither an automotive or industrial battery.
An industrial battery or battery pack is one which is:
(i) designed exclusively for industrial or professional uses;
(ii) used as a source of power for propulsion in an electric vehicle;
(iii) unsealed, but is not an automotive battery; or
(iv) sealed, but is not a portable battery.
