Why is carbon bad?

Carbon is essential to life, yet too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is leading to climate change.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gases and has a major influence on the earth’s energy balance by trapping some of the energy reflected off the earth and preventing it from escaping out to space, thus causing the atmosphere to warm.

Since the industrial revolution, human activities have resulted in an increase in the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Atmospheric CO2 alone has increased by 30% in this time and levels are currently at their highest for 800,000 years.

The increasingly accepted (based on more and more scientific facts) opinion is that climate change will eventually bring devastation to mankind through rising sea levels, glacier retreat, arctic shrinkage, flooding, extreme weather and so on.

In the UK, organisations are responsible for 45% of carbon emissions, therefore UK companies need to embrace carbon management as part of their corporate responsibility agenda and realise the benefits that can be achieved from a carbon management programme.
