About WEEE
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive is European legislation that became UK law under the WEEE Regulations at the beginning of 2007. It has been described as the single most important piece of European-wide environmental legislation to have ever hit the UK.
The Regulations aim to deliver a more sustainable approach to managing electrical and electronic waste by increasing the volume of material being reused or recycled and reducing the amount sent to landfill. In essence it enforces the recovery and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment at the end of life.
It is estimated that over 100,000 UK businesses (such as manufacturers, brand owners, importers, distributors and retailers) are affected by the legislation and the obligations they face are dependant upon the nature of their activities relating to the supply of electrical and electronic equipment. Through Evans Logistics, we have an in-house treatment option for WEEE as they offer treatment, recovery and recycling of the majority of product categories.
The main obligations of companies classified as ‘producers’ began on 1st July 2007. Such producers have a financial responsibility to pay the costs of collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE. The regulations will also address the issue of historic WEEE and new WEEE with the obligation requirements varying for each.
