Fridges and freezers

The ODS regulations, which came into effect on 1 October 2000, require the removal of controlled ODS (ozone depleting substances) from refrigeration equipment before such appliances are scrapped.

This requirement came into force immediately for industrial and commercial appliances, placing the legal obligation to comply with the users of industrial fridges and, for an interim period, local authorities with a responsibility for the disposal of domestic fridges.

The regulations demand all CFCs and HCFCs must be recovered from fridges and freezers prior to their disposal. This applies to ODS in the insulating foam inside the fridge, as well as to the refrigerant in cooling system.

On the back of the ODS regulations, our inhouse partner Evans Logistics made significant investment in a state of the art fridge recycling plant at Capital Valley to specifically handle domestic and commercial fridges, freezers and air conditioning units.
