Hazardous waste regulations
The hazardous waste regulations have replaced the special waste regulations. The term ‘special waste’ has been abandoned and replaced with the term ‘hazardous waste’. The hazardous waste regulations will affect all premises within England and Wales.
All premises generating hazardous waste will need to register if they generate more than 200kg of hazardous waste per year. The mixing of non-hazardous waste with hazardous waste is banned in order to increase recycling rates. There is also a requirement of the Environment Agency to inspect registered producers periodically.
Since 16 July 2005, some previously non-hazardous products are now considered hazardous, such as single use cameras, computer monitors and TVs, IT equipment and fluorescent tubes.
Under the hazardous waste regulations you may have the task of disposing of electrical and electronic equipment such as TVs and monitors containing CRTs, fluorescent lighting, and fridges/freezers. It is an offence to have hazardous waste collected from an unregistered site and it is also an offence not to submit a quarterly return.
