The first ISO standard for Sustainable Procurement has been approved and released, named ISO 20400. Sustainable procurement maximises positive social, environmental and economic impacts. This identifies as making smarter choices with all purchases. ISO 20400 will guide organizations wanting to integrate sustainability into their procurement processes. CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is a massive part of the Comply Direct vision and sustainable procurement links in to social responsibility, as it enables organizations to contribute to sustainable development by minimizing environmental impact and contributing to the society and economy.
ISO 20400 differs from previous ISO standards in that companies cannot become ‘certified’ under this standard, and instead should use it as a guidance for expectations of responsibility of the environment in sustainable procurement.
Our Sustainability leader, Liz Watson, commented on the new ISO standard "ISO 20400 offers a great framework for businesses looking to embed sustainability into their purchasing processes. The new standard is part of a growing trend toward influencing the supply chain which we have seen embedded into ISO 14001 through the new 2015 standard.”
