defra delay glass recycling target announcement

19th March 2014

Defra have confirmed to Comply Direct that the government response to the Glass recycling target for business to 2017 consultation was not included in the budget dossier (19.03.2014) as initially planned. Sarah Steeds of Defra confirmed this afternoon to Comply Direct MD Gareth Roberts that the response will indeed be released tomorrow morning and will be made available to all consultation respondents (including Comply Direct).

The much anticipated response will confirm which of the following options the government will choose to proceed with in order to meet concerns expressed last year by the glass recycling industry and PRN market stakeholders as to the validity of the data which the targets have been based upon:

Option 1 – Do nothing – keep the glass packaging recycling business target at 81%.

Option 2(a) – Lower the glass packaging recycling targets to 75% and maintain the split between re-melt and other applications at the same percentages

Option 2(b) – Lower the glass packaging recycling targets to 75% and amend the split between re-melt and other applications

Option 3(a) – Lower the glass packaging recycling targets to 77% and maintain the split between re-melt and other applications at the same percentages

Option 3(b) – Lower the glass packaging recycling targets to 77% and amend the split between re-melt and other applications Comply Direct will compile a full breakdown of the government response to all packaging members and interested parties once it has been made available to us tomorrow morning (20.03.2014) and will publish this on our website as well as distributing through our communications channels.

Keep an eye on our Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn feeds for the update
