More than 95 per cent of those who buy both their gas and electricity from the same big company could have made average savings of between £158 and £234 a year if they had shopped around, the Competition and Markets Authority said. In an update on its energy market inquiry, launched last summer amid allegations of profiteering, the CMA said it would now investigate whether the Big Six firms actively attempt to keep customers "disengaged, so as to retain them on high tariffs". An investigation has found that 95 per cent of customers of the so-called Big Six are paying up to £234 over the odds. To make those savings, all you need to do is switch tariff or supplier. The Competition and Markets Authority said the average saving available to these customers was between £158 and £234 a year depending on the supplier.
