The John Lewis Partnership, one of the UK’s largest retail groups, have signed an energy supply deal with SmartestEnergy which will see over 380 Waitrose and John Lewis sites supplied with 100 per cent renewable energy from January 2015. The John Lewis Partnership, which includes Waitrose, continue to make ongoing commitments to reducing waste, energy use and carbon to become wholly more sustainable and this new deal alongside the group’s signatory status to the Courtauld Commitment and internal policies such as The Waitrose Way see the John Lewis Partnership lead the way in boosting renewable generation projects from across the UK.
Nigel Keen, the Partnership's Director of Property Services, said: “As a responsible retailer, the Partnership aims to source sustainably across its supply chains and this agreement provides us with full transparency over where our energy is coming from. Working with SmartestEnergy means we can support independent renewable generators and contribute to progress towards the UK's target for 15 per cent of energy demand to be met from renewable sources by 2020.”
SmartestEnergy offer ‘green tariffs’ which source power from environmentally-friendly sources including wind, hydro-electric-power and biomass as well as buying energy from independent UK based renewable generation projects owned by communities, farmers and small businesses to ensure sustainability.
The John Lewis Partnership are partnered with the producer compliance scheme, Comply Direct, for their producer compliance with the UK Packaging Waste and WEEE Regulations. As a company with green ambitions themselves, Comply Direct are very proud to support a retailer that actively works with renewable energy projects.
Gareth Roberts, Managing Director of Comply Direct, said: “As a compliance scheme, we are focused on green and sustainable solutions for business so we applaud any of our compliance scheme members who set up and work towards achieving green business goals. We are particularly proud of our relationship with the John Lewis Partnership as here is a UK business that continues to explore every avenue to achieve a more sustainable future for their products and their vision.”
