Q3 batteries data published

Batteries

The Environment Agency have published the latest data showing the amount of portable batteries placed on the UK market, collected and treated.

The data shows the current position of those producers and schemes with a requirement to meet the target of 10% collection for 2010. However, it does bring to attention that the amount of batteries collected is approximately 20% higher than the amount of batteries being accepted for treatment sites and for which the evidence is issued that demonstrates whether a scheme has met its targets.

The information in the table below shows that cumulatively, at present, evidence is available to achieve a 9.5% collection rate. However, in addition to this there is approximately another 600 tonnes that has been collected and not yet delivered to a treatment centre. The assumption is that these batteries are being held in a reserve to make up the amount of evidence if it is perceived that they are going to fall short of their targets. Another view could be that the batteries, will be carried into next year to contribute towards the 2011 target of 18%.
