DEFRA publish proposed 2024 WEEE collection targets

DEFRA have published proposed WEEE collection targets for 2024 and are inviting input until 5pm on 8th March.

The overall proposed target for 2024 collections is 479,857 tonnes which is a small increase on the 2023 target of 472,032. The targets DEFRA set are drawn together by analysing past trends in collections and consider additional factors such as market trends.

The 2024 proposed target is set 1.5% higher than the actual 2023 collection levels but the targets are not higher than 2023 collection levels in every category. A summary of changes by category, are displayed in the table below.

There is a suggestion, based on a 3 year trend analysis, that the Small Mixed WEEE target (categories 2-10) should be increased from the 2023 actual collected level. DEFRA have indicated this uplift is appropriate considering the impact factors such as the communications campaigns Material Focus are running to increase consumer awareness around how to dispose of Small Mixed WEEE and also the compulsory 1:1 takeback of Small Mixed WEEE by large retailers which has been in place for 3 years.

An increase is also proposed in Display Equipment (category 11) where increased volumes of returns are being seen at recyclers.

Finally, DEFRA are very keen to hear views on where the level should be set for PV panels (category 14) where they have proposed for an increase in collection level for 2024 based on baseline analysis.

If you would like to provide your views on these targets please do contact us weee@beyond.ly to arrange a call or to provide your views by 5pm Thursday 7th March.
